Have you ever wondered about how you would feel if you could have anything that you ever wanted? Every time I go to the mall in Minot, North Dakota, I look at the Sweet Delights. I always walk by them on the way into the mall. I wish I could have a piece of every kind of candy in the gumball machines. Of course, I have to wonder where I would put all that candy or how I would feel if I ate a piece of every kind of Sweet Delight. In our story called "The Best Gifts," a girl named Keeka wanted to get something for herself from the store, even though she was supposed to be buying something for her friend. It took a while before she realized that she already had some of the best gifts in the world and they didn't cost her a thing!
If you want to know more what Keeka learned, read our God Is For Every DayŽ - Stories and listen to our songs. You can also read all about God and how He loves you in our free online Bible. Start reading today!
Thinking about what we don't have all the time can lead us down a slippery slope. To get an idea of what that means, look at the picture of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, in the North Unit. The pictue is taken from the edge of a lookout, where you can see the awesome scene of the Little Missouri River flowing by the steep hills of the Badlands. It's all so amazing to look at that pretty soon you forget that right in front of you is a very steep slope.

You can ask any kid from nearby Watford City or Grassy Butte, North Dakota and they will tell you that it's a long, long way down that hill so you'd better not forget to look at where your feet are so you don't slip and slide.

Thinking that everyone else has more stuff than you do, like more games and movies or a better bike can lead you to a way of life where you are never happy with what you have. If you are always looking at what other people have or see so many things on TV and in the store that you think you need to have, you start to forget what you already do have. That leads you down the slippery slope of always being disappointed and
unhappy!
Looking at the picture of the old post office in Grassy Butte reminds me of how the pioneers lived with very few
things, but learned to love life by enjoying what they did have. Maybe you've gone camping before in a tent or a camper and still have had lots of fun. You get to have a campfire and roast marshmallows with chocolate and graham crackers. Or you just sit by the fire and tell ghost stories or read a book. Those are some of the best to have!

I have a saying that I kind of made to remind me to be happy with what I have or where I'm at all the time and it goes like this. "90% of life is thinking about what we already have, and everything else is a hot dog!" 90% is an amount I just made up but it means that most of the time my thoughts need to be positive ones. Now, it's a funny saying for me to say, because I was never so crazy about doing math, and especially not % percentages. It took me a long time to learn that a percentage is just a way to make big numbers more manageable. For instance, if you really did have a gumball machine full of colorful gumballs, and you wanted to know how many gumballs were red, it would take forever to count all those gumballs. It's easier to take a scoupful of them and count out 100 gumballs. Out of the 100 gumballs, how many are red? If 20 are red, then you can figure that about 20 of every hundred gumballs are going to be red. If there are 500 gumballs in the machine then just think about that as 5 groups of 100. About 20 of each group of 100 will be red gumballs.

If you live on the coast you might like to just spend the day at the beach listening to the radio or laying out in the sunshine getting a tan. Or you might just like to hang out at the mall, but you don't really need to buy something all the time to have fun. It may seem important to have a $60 pair of jeans because your friends do, but you'll find that having those jeans won't make you a better person or a happier person either.
100 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 100 = 500 Total Gumballs
 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 = 100 Red Gumballs
So what do gumballs have to do with my saying? Well, did you know that some people believe we have about 250 thoughts in an hour. That makes 2000 thoughts in a day, and 2,000,000 thoughts in a year, maybe more. Now think of those bad, sad or angry thoughts as black gumballs and those good thoughts as red and blue and yellow and orange and green gumballs. If you are thinking happy, peaceful, funny, thankful, thoughts 90% of the time, your gumball machine is going to be awesomely colorful. You'll have 1,800,000 beautiful gumballs thoughts and only 200,000 of the black gumballs!

So I use that saying to keep myself in the right place, a place where I'm happy with what I have and who I am. As soon as I'm thinking a complaining thought, I say to myself..
90% of life is thinking about what I already have, and everything else is a hotdog!
So what about the hotdog? Well, I'll let you figure that one out for yourself.
